1940 Marx "New Milk Wagon and Horse" in Original Box

1940 Marx

Outstanding clockwork tin litho "New Milk Wagon and Horse" by Marx in near mint condition. Comes complete with high grade original box which grades excellent to excellent+.

It runs on a simple spring wind-up mechanism. The rear tires must be kept stationary to prevent them from turning while winding it up. The rods which permanently hold the horse to the wagon are steel.

Marked as the Toytown Dairy wagon it was based on an 1931 toy simply called "Milk Wagon". Which is why this version was called the "New" milk wagon.

It was produced with either black or (like the earlier version) white tires. Both single (black horse) and horse team (one black and one white horse) models were available. It was available "in-store" and through the 1940 Sears Roebuck Christmas catalog for 25¢. Interestingly, without any design change, the 1931 version sold for a whopping $1.39. For this reason it's a particularly scarce toy.

Best of all it works great!

The box is all red printed text. It includes the toy name, Marx logo, name and address. It's complete with all eight original endflaps.
